Curvy Jones on: TalkBack Tuesday- A Few Good Books
I thought of this in the shower, as I was pondering what to blog about today. I looked through a few memes but none of them seemed interesting enough and none of them were really ‘ME’. So I thought I’d give people a chance to talk and tell me some things. Even if you don’t normally respond to my blog posts, I hope you’ll have a suggestion or two today!
This week I am looking for a recommend on good books. I know ‘good’ is subjective, but if good to you = Twilight, we probably don’t read the same genre. I have a Kindle full of books that I picked up on a whim and decided I should read. Some of them I got a chapter or two in and decided it just wasn’t for me. Some I devoured in mere days. I have a hunger for a great storyline, a twisty tale, a little bit of delicious salaciousness throughout.
I’m not much for the snappy sarcastic mid-twenties I-shop-a-lot-but-I’m-knee-deep-in-credit-card-debt-but-it’s-hilarious-bceause-I’m-really-cute kinds of books. I recently read a great post on That Girl and I’m not much into it. I want something… more gripping. More dramatic. More real than a spoiled brat trying to become unspoiled. Spare me, unless she saves a life or something.
But I don’t want to get toooo dramatic. I tried reading some Jodi Picoult and… dear Gawd… a kid dies in every. single. novel. I just cannot read that, book after book. I have a hard time feeling emotionally connected to her characters. It’s like… stop whinging already! I don’t ‘care’ that these people die, is the thing. I think I am supposed to. I started with The Tenth Circle… it was okay. I followed that up with The Pact. In the middle of reading that, my baby brother died in a car accident. Knowing that a young character dies in that book kept me from finishing it for almost a year. I made the mistake of reading My Sister’s Keeper immediately after that, and sobbed through the entire last two chapters or so… the way that Anna writes about Kate after her death was exactly how I was feeling about the death of JoeJoe. It was hard to read and yet I couldn’t stop. After a failed attempt to start Nineteen Minutes, I’ve decided I’m not in a place to really enjoy her work. Maybe another time.
So what DO I like, I bet you’re wondering? Hard to say! Ha. I know I like drama. Historical romance. Two great books that I read recently are insanely gory but so well written—Sharp Objects and Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. Not for the faint at heart but SO. GOOD. I reviewed them over on my writing journal last year. I’m on the edge of my seat, waiting for a new release from her. I also recently enjoyed The Help (which I hear is being turned into a movie!) and Sugar, which is a bit old but still enjoyed it, Rainwater (Sandra Brown- mystery writer- tries her hand at historical romance and except for a rather weak and rushed ending, is a success!). I also enjoyed Her Fearful Symmetry, though I need to read it again, because what the eff? I totally didn’t get some of the complicated twists, but I do so love a twist! Ooh, and I know people are kind of literary snobs about Grisham but I’ve read just about everything he’s written in the legal thriller genre and I eat. it. up. with. a. spoon! A close second is John Lescroart– I love that he uses the same main characters in each book. It’s like reading a series of the stories of their lives. I tried some James Patterson, though… just didn’t grab me. Maybe I like the lower level legal drama. The CIA kind of stuff seems interesting but I just can’t get into it.
So, I said all that to say…. Whatcha readin’? Do you think I’d like it? Post it up below and I’ll check it out—I’m looking for a few good men… errrrr… books! it’s TalkBack Tuesday. Come talk to me!
PS. If you suggest a Self Help Dr Phil McGraw-ish How To Get a Damn Man Already book I will SMITE you, and then come to your house and drink the last of your milk and hang your toilet paper backwards. Don’t. do it.
PPS, if you’re on Goodreads, FRIEND ME! So I can stalk you see what you’re reading!
